A Royal commission changed the state border in 1747, and Little Compton along with Tiverton and Bristol became part of Rhode Island, setting them off from the area of Old Dartmouth. After the "Old Colony" was merged into the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the north, a local colonial representative to the General Court in Boston boasted that all the stone walls in Little Compton would stretch to the State House and back, if laid end to end. In 1682, Sakonnet was incorporated by the Plymouth Colony and was renamed Little Compton, presumably in reference to Little Compton in Warwickshire, England. Wilbor House, built in 1692, is now the headquarters of the Little Compton Historical Society and a museum Today, a plaque marks the location on West Main Road.
In 1675, Church built a house in Little Compton, just prior to King Philip's War. Among the 29 original proprietors was Colonel Benjamin Church, who would become well known for his role in the late 17th-century conflicts with surrounding Indian tribes, initially the Wampanoags and later, the Narragansetts. With her acquiescence, the new settlers divided the land into standard-sized lots for farms. The ruler of the Native Americans was a female sachem named Awashonks who was friendly to the newcomers and remained so during and after King Phillip's War. The first European settlers were from Duxbury, Massachusetts in the Plymouth Colony, which granted them their charter. The name has been interpreted in a variety of ways including "where the water pours forth". "I would much rather see them actively involved in stopping bullying than looking for people to sue," says Judd.Little Compton was originally inhabited by the Sakonnet Indians and their settlement was called Sakonnet or Saughonet. Henry says they are also looking at whether the school and the abandoned plant where Sedwick took her own life may also be liable in some way. And according to attorney David Henry, Crist's law firm and Sedwick's mother are considering lawsuits aimed at the two girls who have been charged, their parents, and "as many as 15 other kids" for their roles in bullying Sedwick. Jose Baez, who famously won an acquittal for Casey Anthony, announced Wednesday that he is representing the 12-year-old charged with stalking Sedwick. He told Crimesider that he hopes lawmakers will consider legislation allowing schools to be more pro-active when it comes to bullying so that we don't have to "criminalize children." Judd says he'd like to see schools able to mandate that a child caught bullying take counseling or anger-management classes, and have their phone taken away until they do.Īnd while Judd says he is pleased that the Sedwick case seems to have drawn attention to the problem of bullying, he has no love for the attorneys "busting in here" to get involved. Judd says he has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from his community - and people as far away as Hawaii and Alaska - for his decision to charge the girls for their alleged bullying. Judd described the family as being "like a Jerry Springer episode" with a "survival of the fittest mentality." David Henry, the lead attorney on the case, told Crimesider that Rebecca's father was not involved in the family's life and that Norman "was doing her best" with her children. Norman is now being represented by the law firm of Florida's former and perhaps future governor, Charlie Crist.
